In 2018 I first witnessed Dr. Zeng’s outstanding work in mini-percutaneous surgery at the EAU Congress. That experience led me to visit him in Guangzhou, where the surgical volume and quality far exceeded expectations and inspired the idea of creating an exchange program.
In 2025, thanks to Devicare’s commitment to supporting the urological community, we launched the first Spain–China exchange. Over two intensive weeks with Dr. Zeng and Spanish colleagues (Dr. Mercadé, Dr. León, Dr. Mora and Dr. Arzoz), we shared insights in percutaneous renal surgery and observed techniques that push our field forward.
Programs like this strengthen our skills and improve patient outcomes, the ultimate purpose of our work.

The visit to the Urology Department in Guangzhou was an enriching professional experience. We observed prone percutaneous surgeries performed by a highly skilled and experienced team, with a case volume that is remarkable even by national standards, using cutting-edge technology, much of which has not yet been released to the market. All of this took place under the supervision of Professor Guohua Zeng, a world-renowned expert in endourology and lithiasis.
The most valuable aspect was being able to see and participate in a different approach to managing lithiasis. I also made professional contacts, and some friends, in China that I hope to see again soon.
I highly recommend this exchange program to any endourologist who is curious and eager to learn new techniques, regardless of prior experience. My sincere thanks to Devicare, Dornier Medtech, and especially Rosendo Garganta, Juan López from Hospital Clínic, and Professor Guohua Zeng for allowing us to participate in this program.

In my case, joining this program was something I was truly looking forward to, and I can honestly say the experience exceeded my expectations.
Professor Zheng and his entire team were exceptionally kind and attentive, making us feel at home from the very first moment. Being able to share this experience with colleagues and friends from other Spanish centers made it even more enriching.
The stone disease unit at Guangzhou Hospital works at a remarkably high pace, with more than six operating rooms running throughout the day for various endourological procedures. Every day, they perform multiple percutaneous surgeries, many of them highly complex, with an excellent success rate. Their workflow is undoubtedly different from what we are used to in our centers, with minimal exposure to X-rays and patients positioned prone for percutaneous access.
We also had the opportunity to compare the newest devices on the market, flexible ureteroscopes, flexible digital nephroscopes, all types of consumables and the full range of energy sources for stone fragmentation. They participate in numerous trials, allowing them to test surgical instruments on a daily basis. Without a doubt, it is an experience I would recommend 100%.

In November, I had the opportunity to take part in an observational fellowship in Guangzhou with Prof. Zeng and his team, within the framework of a scholarship promoted by Devicare. Although the original stay was planned for two weeks, I was able to join the group for one week, which turned out to be an extraordinarily enriching experience.
During this period, I observed a high volume and wide variety of procedures (RIRS, mini-PCNL, multi-tract), and was able to witness first-hand the technical excellence of the team. Beyond the outstanding surgical level, I would like to highlight the human quality, hospitality, and exceptional professionalism of Prof. Zeng and his entire team, who made us feel truly at home from the very first day. My stay at the 1st Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University was a truly rewarding experience. It offered an excellent opportunity to observe a different approach to managing complex stone disease cases, which has significantly enriched my daily practice.
Throughout the visit, we were able to see a wide variety of procedures performed by a highly experienced team, while also exploring emerging technologies that are not yet available on the market. The program also allowed us to connect with professionals from multiple hospitals, fostering collaboration and exchange of insights.
